LITTLE LESSON 14 Number and Place Value

Counting through zero

Let's count straight past zero and out the other side.

Ready to have a go? Jump to practice ↓
Let’s get the idea.

Here’s how it works

Count the distance to zero, then carry on the other side.

What we’re exploring

  • counting straight through zero and out the other side
  • adding and taking away across zero
  • finding the gap between a negative and a positive number

Crossing zero uses part of the total change.

LET’S WORK ONE OUT TOGETHER

A little example

The temperature rises 7°C from −4°C. What is it now?

  1. 1

    From −4 to 0 is a rise of 4.

  2. 2

There are 3 more degrees to rise.

  3. 3

    0 + 3 = 3°C.

Make a little room for your workings.
NOW IT’S YOUR TURN

Have a little go.

Four questions. Plenty of thinking space.
Use paper, then add photos of your workings.

Your pace. Your way. ↘

When should we tell you if your answers are right?

You can’t change an answer or its photos after you submit it. You also can’t change when you see your results once you start.
