LITTLE LESSON 08 Number and Place Value

Rounding to 1,000

Now we round the big numbers to the nearest thousand.

Let’s get the idea.

Here’s how it works

Use neighbouring multiples of 1,000 to round.

What we’re exploring

  • finding the nearest thousand
  • using the hundreds digit to decide
  • saying about how many when the exact count is big

The hundreds digit tells you which side of halfway you are on.

LET’S WORK ONE OUT TOGETHER

A little example

Round 7,650 to the nearest 1,000.

  1. 1

It lies between 7,000 and 8,000.

  2. 2

    Halfway is 7,500.

  3. 3

7,650 is above halfway, so round to 8,000.

Make a little room for your workings.
NOW IT’S YOUR TURN

Have a little go.

Four questions. Plenty of thinking space.
Use paper, then add photos of your workings.

Your pace. Your way. ↘

When should we tell you if your answers are right?

You can’t change an answer or its photos after you submit it. You also can’t change when you see your results once you start.
