Let’s get the idea.

Here’s how it works

Roman numerals use letter values. A smaller value before a larger one is subtracted in standard pairs.

What we’re exploring

  • what I, V, X, L and C stand for
  • reading roman numbers back into ours
  • how a smaller letter in front means take away

I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1,000.

LET’S WORK ONE OUT TOGETHER

A little example

Read XLVI.

  1. 1

    X before L means 50 − 10 = 40.

  2. 2

    VI means 5 + 1 = 6.

  3. 3

    40 + 6 = 46.

Make a little room for your workings.
NOW IT’S YOUR TURN

Have a little go.

Four questions. Plenty of thinking space.
Use paper, then add photos of your workings.

When should we tell you if your answers are right?

You can’t change an answer or its photos after you submit it. You also can’t change when you see your results once you start.
