Section 19: education when your child can't attend school
If your child can't attend school, the local authority has a duty to arrange suitable education. That's Section 19, and it's the sentence to quote when you write to them. Waiting for the LA doesn't mean waiting to act: many families run tutoring hours alongside, and the tutor's written notes become useful evidence of what actually works for your child.

Common questions
What is Section 19, and does it apply to us?
Section 19 of the Education Act 1996 is the local authority's duty to arrange suitable education for a child who can't attend school because of illness, exclusion or otherwise. If your child is out of school and the LA hasn't put anything in place, that's the duty to quote when you write to them. Our tutoring is arranged privately by you, but the notes tutors keep can support that conversation.
Is this alternative provision the LA can fund?
We're a private service you arrange directly, not a commissioned alternative-provision body. Some families do fund hours through an EHCP personal budget or agree contributions with their LA; that's the LA's decision and we can't promise it. What we keep simple is the number: £60 an hour online, £80 in person, no registration fee.
Do your tutors follow the national curriculum?
They follow your child. For a home-educating family that usually means working within your own plan; for a child heading back to school it means keeping the core skills warm so the return is softer. If curriculum alignment matters to you, say so in the enquiry and the tutor will build around it.
If we home educate, what are we responsible for?
In elective home education you take on responsibility for providing a suitable full-time education, and you fund it. Tutors can carry parts of it with you but not the legal responsibility. If your child has an EHCP and school genuinely can't meet their needs, it's worth reading about EOTAS before you deregister: it keeps the local authority responsible and funding in place.
My child won't engage with anyone new. How do the first visits work?
Slowly, and that's deliberate. Tutors who take these hours expect a settling-in period: short visits, a parent nearby, activities with no demand attached. Your child sets the pace and nothing is forced.
