The research behind it

This programme is informed by the research behind PDA Society guidance and the low-demand parenting literature from Christie, Duncan and others. The evidence is emerging and grounded in growing practice evidence, so no outcome is promised. This is specialist guidance for parents, not diagnosis or treatment, and the session 1 screen routes red flags to the GP, NHS or CAMHS.

How we'll know it worked

You will see your session 1 baseline and final results side by side. Progress may look like more demands tolerated, fewer crisis episodes and family life working better, but outcomes are not guaranteed.

  • You set 2 to 3 goals in your own words, score each from 0 to 10 in session 1, then score them again at the end.
  • A 30-second weekly log tracks meltdowns and demands your child managed successfully.
  • You give your own stress a simple rating each week.
  • You keep a written outcome summary that can also be used as evidence for school meetings, EHCP applications and annual reviews.

Is this for me?

Rewards make things worse

Rewards, consequences and firmer boundaries seem to raise the pressure rather than help.

You want to understand anxiety-driven avoidance, not treat it as naughtiness.

Small asks become standoffs

Shoes, dinner or leaving the house can trigger a panic-driven refusal.

Your child has, or seems to have, a PDA profile. You do not need a diagnosis, as PDA is a profile rather than a standalone UK diagnosis.

Low demand needs tailoring

You have read about low-demand parenting but need to make it work for your child and your week.

You want a parent-led route, because direct work with a PDA child is usually counterproductive.

If you want one conversation before committing to 8 weeks, start with the single 45-minute session. Understanding your child's PDA fits better.

Held us through the worst few months. Understanding the demand avoidance first, then home, then school, in that order, was exactly the right way round for us.

Sceptical about video sessions, won over by session three. She knew our boy by then and the plan after each call became my bible. The cost made us think twice, but no regrets.

Didn't know where to start with a PDA profile nobody around us seemed to understand. This gave us a path, and people who believed us. Home life is genuinely calmer now.

Spread over a few weeks so I could actually try the low-demand stuff between sessions and report back. Being firehosed in one go would never have worked for us.

Same specialist start to finish, a written plan after every call, and a home that no longer revolves around standoffs. The continuity with PDA is everything.

The school session alone was worth the programme. Our daughter's school went from 'she's just defiant' to actually reducing the demands on her, because the specialist gave me the words and the evidence.

Better value than booking sessions separately and starting cold each time. One session got rescheduled which pushed things back a week, but they were flexible and apologetic about it.

This is specialist guidance for parents, not diagnosis or treatment. Session 1 always screens for anything that needs your GP, NHS or CAMHS first, and we tell you straight away if it does.

Common questions

What if it does not work?

Your final session compares the ending scores with your session 1 baseline and says plainly if your goals were not achieved. If the original understanding was wrong, you will be offered a different programme or specialist. If six sessions were not enough, you can choose a discounted top-up block. If the need is clinical, you will get a written GP or CAMHS referral summary. There is always a clear next step, but outcomes are not guaranteed.

Who attends, and are sessions online?

The sessions are parent only and online. Direct work with a PDA child is usually counterproductive because a stranger arriving to work on them can itself feel like a demand. If observation would help, it can be a low-key in-person home visit framed as visiting you.

Do we need a PDA diagnosis?

No. PDA is a profile rather than a formal standalone diagnosis in the UK. This is specialist guidance for parents, not diagnosis or treatment. Session 1 includes a screen so any red flags are routed to the GP, NHS or CAMHS.

Will we have the same specialist throughout?

Yes. The same autism consultant with PDA specialism works with you across the programme. That continuity matters when small details about demands, anxiety and family life shape what will be useful.

Is £360 the whole cost?

Yes. It is £360 all-in for all 6 x 45-minute sessions. Booked separately, the sessions would cost £480, so the programme saves you £120.
