The research behind it

This programme is informed by the research behind ACT-based and mindfulness-based interventions for parents of autistic children, including randomised controlled trials that found improvements in child outcomes as well as parent wellbeing. It is specialist guidance for parents, not diagnosis or treatment, and session 1 includes screening and signposting to your GP or NHS talking therapies where scores indicate.

How we'll know it worked

Success means your wellbeing has measurably improved and a sustainable weekly rhythm is actually running. Your session 1 baseline and final-session results are shown side by side, and you keep a written outcome summary.

  • The four ONS personal wellbeing questions, known as ONS4, answered before the programme and again at the end.
  • Two or three goals set in your own words in session 1, scored from 0 to 10 at the start, midway and at the end.
  • A 30-second weekly self-care log showing whether your new rhythm actually happened.

Is this for me?

You are running on empty

Everything goes to your child, and your own needs keep falling off the list.

You want to sort what truly matters from everything that merely fills the week.

Guilt keeps taking over

You snap, then spend the rest of the day hating yourself for it.

Guilt or grief after your child's diagnosis keeps pulling you into the same spiral.

You carry the whole load

The school messages, appointments and household planning seem to sit with you.

You need clearer boundaries with school and family, and people you can genuinely ask for help.

This is specialist guidance for parents, not diagnosis or treatment. Session 1 always screens for anything that needs your GP, NHS or CAMHS first, and we tell you straight away if it does.

Common questions

What if it does not work for me?

There are no guaranteed outcomes. In the final session, you and your specialist look honestly at your goals and decide whether a different programme or specialist would fit better, a discounted top-up block would give you enough time, or you need a written summary to take to your GP.

Who attends, and is it online?

It is always online and just for you, with a neurodiversity specialist. Your child never joins, so sessions can fit more easily around work and childcare.

Is this therapy?

No. It is specialist guidance for parents, not diagnosis or treatment, and it is not a substitute for NHS mental health care. Session 1 includes a wellbeing screen, so your specialist can point you to your GP or NHS talking therapies if your scores suggest that is the right support.

I barely have time for myself. How will I fit this in?

There are six 45-minute online sessions across 8 weeks. Weeks 5 and 7 have no session by design, giving you breathing room to practise, and the between-session check-in is a 30-second weekly log.

Why work on me when my child needs help?

This programme is for your wellbeing, and your child never attends. Research on parent wellbeing interventions for parents of autistic children found improvements in child outcomes too, although no particular outcome can be promised.
