Autism Parent Psychoeducation

You have the diagnostic report, but not the help to make sense of it. Across six 45-minute sessions over 8 weeks, you meet parent-only online with the same autism consultant, working from the report towards a real understanding of your child and a profile document you keep.

The research behind it

This programme is informed by the research behind the National Autistic Society's EarlyBird and Cygnet post-diagnosis group programmes, delivered 1:1 and shaped entirely around your child. It is built for the post-diagnosis family support recommended in NICE guideline CG170 and is specialist guidance for parents, not a clinical service.

How we'll know it worked

You will compare your parent confidence at the session 1 baseline and at the final session, with the results shown side by side. A completed profile document that you keep and put to use is the other tangible result, all recorded in your written outcome summary.

  • Your confidence, rated from 1 to 10 across 6 areas at the start and again at the end, shown side by side.
  • Two or three goals in your own words, scored from 0 to 10 at the start and re-scored at the end.
  • The completed child profile document, which you keep and can hand to school.

Is this for me?

The diagnosis just landed

Your child's autism report is sitting there full of clinical language.

You were given a leaflet, but no proper follow-up support.

You are still guessing

The diagnosis is not new, but you still struggle to connect the report with your child.

Behaviour, food, sleep or school seem to make more sense to professionals than they do to you.

A group does not fit

The group course never appeared, has a long wait or runs at times you cannot manage.

You want 1:1 support that starts from your child's autism report and stays about your child.

Just want one conversation before deciding? Talk to an autism consultant fits better.

This is specialist guidance for parents, not diagnosis or treatment. Session 1 always screens for anything that needs your GP, NHS or CAMHS first, and we tell you straight away if it does.

Common questions

What if it does not work?

We cannot guarantee an outcome. In the final session, you and your consultant look plainly at what changed and what did not. If the original understanding was wrong, you are offered a different programme or specialist. If you needed longer, you are offered a discounted top-up block. If the need is clinical, you receive a written summary for your GP or CAMHS. You will not be left with a shrug.

Who attends, and are the sessions online?

You attend all six sessions online and your child never needs to join. This is guidance for you as the parent, so the understanding travels home even if your child would never sit through a video call.

Is this the EarlyBird or Cygnet course?

No. The programme is informed by the research behind the National Autistic Society's EarlyBird and Cygnet group programmes, but we do not deliver either programme or imply NAS accreditation. This is 1:1, arranged around you and shaped entirely around your child.

Is this therapy or a clinical service?

No. It is specialist guidance for parents, not diagnosis or treatment. Session 1 includes a safety screen, so anything that needs the GP, NHS or CAMHS is routed there with a written summary.

Why are six sessions spread over 8 weeks?

Weeks 5 and 7 are deliberate practice weeks, not gaps. You try things at home, notice what happens and check in by message, so your observations feed the profile document and your environment plan is tested before the final review.
