Dyslexia and maths: why they collide and what actually helps

When times-table practice ends in tears, the problem may be retrieval, memory or language rather than mathematical understanding.

Dyslexia and maths: why they collide and what actually helps

It is Tuesday evening, the Year 4 multiplication tables letter is on the worktop, and 7 × 8 has ended in tears again. Your child can explain a Roman aqueduct but cannot hold the answer in mind for six seconds. The school says to practise more. You are wondering how dyslexia, supposedly a reading difficulty, turned maths into the nightly battleground.

Why can dyslexia make maths so hard?

Dyslexia can obstruct maths at the points where maths relies on words, memory and rapid retrieval, even when your child understands the underlying idea. The British Dyslexia Association reported in 2025 that around 60% of dyslexic learners have maths learning difficulties. That figure does not mean 60% have dyscalculia.

Three collisions explain much of what you may see. First, number facts such as 7 × 8 are stored and fetched through verbal sound patterns. Weak phonological representations can make that retrieval unreliable (Simmons and Singleton, 2008). Second, working memory has to hold a partial answer while the next step is carried out. A child may understand column subtraction, then lose the carried digit or their place. Third, maths has dense language: difference, product, fewer than, factor, thirteen and thirty. A child can solve 24 + 17 on paper yet stall when the same calculation is buried in a paragraph.

This produces a jagged profile. Reasoning may be good; retrieval is slow. A method looks secure on Friday and has vanished by Monday. In a 2009 study, Fiona Simmons and Chris Singleton found that children with dyslexia could show mathematical strengths alongside difficulty with fact fluency and tasks carrying a heavy verbal load. The inconsistency is evidence, not laziness.

Is it dyslexia, dyscalculia, or both?

Dyslexia-driven maths difficulty mainly disrupts language, memory and retrieval; dyscalculia is a persistent difficulty understanding numbers and quantities themselves. The British Dyslexia Association estimated dyscalculia prevalence at about 6% in 2025. Landerl and Moll's 2010 analysis found reading and arithmetic difficulties co-occurred at two to three times the rate expected by chance, but the underlying difficulties were largely distinct.

What the homework can tell you

  • Times tables will not stick: this can fit dyslexia if your child can build the answer with counters or derive it from 5 × 8 plus 2 × 8. It points more towards dyscalculia if the groups and quantities remain unclear even when memory is taken out.
  • Word problems fail but bare calculations succeed: this strongly suggests that reading or mathematical vocabulary is blocking access to maths. Read the question aloud and ask your child to explain the operation without calculating it.
  • Multi-step methods unravel: losing the line, carried number or order of steps often fits a working-memory and sequencing difficulty. A printed worked example may change the result immediately.
  • Quantity itself feels uncertain: persistent difficulty deciding whether 47 or 74 is larger, estimating roughly how many items are present, or judging whether an answer is plausible points more towards dyscalculia.
  • Thirteen and thirty get confused: check spoken and written versions separately. A sound-processing difficulty can produce this error even when place value is understood.
  • Both patterns appear: ask school to assess number sense as well as reading, memory and processing. One label should not be used to explain away the other.

Screening can identify a pattern, but it is not a diagnosis. Take dated examples from homework and school books to the class teacher and SENDCO (the teacher responsible for special educational needs). Ask them to test what changes when text, time pressure and memory demands are removed.

What actually helps at home?

At home, reduce retrieval pressure and teach connections between facts instead of treating 144 multiplication facts as unrelated answers. More cold quizzing can increase maths anxiety, which consumes still more working memory. Jordan, McGladdery and Dyer found higher maths anxiety in students with dyslexia than in peers without dyslexia in 2014.

  1. Start with secure anchors such as ×2, ×5 and ×10. Derive ×4 by doubling ×2; derive ×9 from ×10 minus one group. Use commutativity so 7 × 8 and 8 × 7 are one fact, not two.
  2. Practise for about ten minutes, frequently and without a stopwatch. Stop while it is still going well. A forty-minute rescue session after tears have started will not build fluent recall.
  3. Move from objects to pictures to symbols. Build 6 × 4 with counters or Cuisenaire rods, draw the array, then write the number sentence. The Education Endowment Foundation's 2022 maths guidance supports purposeful use of manipulatives and representations.
  4. Leave a times-table square and number line visible during homework. Problem-solving practice and retrieval practice can be separate. Taking away the grid while your child is learning how to choose an operation merely changes the thing being tested.
  5. Read word problems aloud and let your child dictate their reasoning. Compare that with independent reading. You will see whether the snag is the maths, the text, or writing the explanation.

Protect the evening. You are not meant to become the intervention teacher after dinner. If ten calm minutes do not shift the pattern, send the examples back to school and ask what teaching will change there.

What should school be doing now?

School should assess the precise barrier, teach it explicitly, record support and review whether it worked. This is the graduated approach, usually called assess, plan, do and review (SEND Code of Practice 2015, paragraphs 6.36–6.44). A formal dyslexia or dyscalculia diagnosis is not required. The legal question is whether your child has a learning difficulty calling for special educational provision (Children and Families Act 2014, section 20).

Useful classroom adjustments

  • Printed worked examples that stay on the desk during multi-step tasks.
  • A multiplication grid for problem-solving, with fluency checked separately.
  • Squared paper or pre-printed layouts to hold place value and alignment.
  • Pre-teaching of terms such as factor, difference and product.
  • Extra processing time and no public cold-calling for rapid facts.
  • Instructions given in short stages, backed up in writing or pictures.

These can be reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010, section 20, when dyslexia has a substantial and long-term effect. The duty applies to ordinary lessons, not only national tests.

Schools often say, "He is fine in maths; it is just tables." Ask to put a bare calculation beside a word problem using the same calculation, then compare accuracy, time and independence. If they say, "Keep practising at home," reply: "What is the school-side intervention, who is delivering it, and on what date will we review the evidence?"That question turns advice into an accountable plan.

What help is allowed in tests?

Access arrangements can remove some barriers, but they do not change every test rule. In the statutory Year 4 multiplication tables check, each question still allows six seconds. The Standards and Testing Agency says that limit cannot be altered in any case (2026 parent guidance).

Schools can use arrangements that are already normal classroom practice, including the built-in audio version, which reads the on-screen text, questions and entered answer aloud. Other options include input assistance, different colour contrast or font size, audible time signals, and removal of the on-screen number pad. Ask which arrangements your child has trialled in the check's practice area. There is no pass mark and the result does not decide a school place or set a qualification. It tells school where fluency needs more teaching.

In the 2026 Key Stage 2 national tests, a reader can be allowed for the mathematics papers, although not for the English reading test. Up to 25% additional time may be available where this is your child's normal way of working and the evidence meets the test rules. At GCSE, arrangements such as extra time and a reader or computer reader also depend on an evidenced normal way of working under Joint Council for Qualifications rules. Get everyday adjustments recorded well before Year 11.

Does tuition work, and what should it cost?

Targeted tuition can help, provided it addresses the child's actual barrier and connects with classroom teaching. As at August 2026, an indicative UK budget is £25–£60 an hour for general private maths tuition and £35–£80 an hour for specialist SpLD or dyslexia tuition. These are market ranges, not fixed or recommended fees: the price varies with the tutor's qualification, your location, the level being taught and whether sessions are online or in person. They are based on current advertised rates from Tutorful and Tutorperch for general tuition, cross-checked against the British Dyslexia Association's tuition service and specialist tutor listings.

In the Education Endowment Foundation Toolkit accessed in August 2026, one-to-one tuition averaged about five additional months of progress. Primary studies averaged about six. Small-group tuition averaged four months overall, with maths studies nearer three months. Structured teaching-assistant interventions averaged four months; general classroom deployment showed little positive benefit.

Those are averages across studies, not a promise for your child. A useful programme is short, regular and assessed from a clear starting point. The EEF describes one-to-one sessions of roughly 30 minutes, three to five times weekly, over a limited block. For this profile, ask how the tutor will teach fact derivation, number sense and vocabulary. "We use a speed app" is not an intervention plan.

The Department for Education subsidy for the National Tutoring Programme ended in August 2024, so it is not a live funded route. Schools now pay for tutoring from their own budgets. Ask the SENDCO what structured maths intervention the school already runs and whether trained teaching-assistant time can be targeted before you buy private tuition.

If you pay privately, compare several qualified tutors and ask each one to put the full fee in writing, including any assessment, resources or cancellation charges. Check training and safeguarding, ask for a written baseline, and agree how progress will be shared with school. AMBDA or an Assessment Practising Certificate signals specialist dyslexia expertise, but the teaching method still matters.

What should you do this week?

This week, turn the pattern into evidence and ask school for one short, dated cycle of support. Do not wait for a diagnosis or for proposed SEND reforms to settle.

  1. Photograph two examples: one bare calculation your child can do and one equivalent word problem or timed fact they cannot. Note the date, help given and what your child said.
  2. Email the class teacher and SENDCO. Ask them to assess retrieval, working memory, mathematical language and number sense separately.
  3. Request four written adjustments, a named intervention, its frequency, and a review date in six weeks. Ask for the plan, not a promise to "monitor".
  4. For Year 4 or Year 6, ask which access arrangements are your child's normal way of working and which have been trialled.
  5. If repeated assess, plan, do and review cycles are not producing progress, you can ask the council for an Education, Health and Care needs assessment yourself. The legal test is whether your child may have SEN and may need provision through a plan (Children and Families Act 2014, section 36). See how to apply for an EHCP.

England's February 2026 Schools White Paper proposed Individual Support Plans and a narrower future role for Education, Health and Care Plans by 2035. The May 2026 King's Speech also announced an Education for All Bill. These are proposals with phased implementation, not a repeal of today's framework. No proposed change takes effect before September 2030; consultation and legislation may alter the detail. Use the rights in force now and keep the paper trail.
