The research behind it
Emotional Regulation and Meltdowns is informed by co-regulation research, by the research behind Ross Greene's Collaborative and Proactive Solutions, and by the research behind Zones of Regulation-style frameworks for the skills vocabulary. It is specialist coaching for parents, not a clinical service, and does not claim to deliver or hold accreditation in those programmes.
How we'll know it worked
You will look for fewer, shorter and less intense meltdowns, with faster recovery. A baseline from session 1 is measured again in session 6, and you keep the written before-and-after summary.
- Two or three goals in your own words, scored from 0 to 10 at the start, midway and at the end.
- A 30-second weekly meltdown log: how many, how long and how intense, rated from 1 to 5.
- The SDQ, a short standard questionnaire, completed before and after the programme.
Is this for me?
After-school hours, transitions or sibling flashpoints regularly end in explosive meltdowns rather than anxiety.
Nothing you try in the middle of a meltdown seems to help.
You have been told to punish the behaviour, but it only makes things harder.
You suspect your child is overwhelmed, not naughty, and you do not need a diagnosis to join.
You want practical steps for preventing meltdowns and for responding in the moment.
You want to measure what changes, so you can see whether the plan helped.
Just want one conversation about home life first? Behaviour & routines at home fits better.

Common questions
What if it does not work?
There are no guaranteed outcomes, and the final session says plainly if the goals have not been met. If the original understanding was wrong, you will be offered a different programme or specialist. If more time is needed, you can choose a top-up block at a discount. If the need is clinical, you will receive a written GP or CAMHS referral summary. Never a shrug.
Who attends, and is it all online?
You attend the six online sessions as the parent. Your child never attends. You can add an optional in-person home observation, where the specialist watches a real flashpoint, such as the after-school hour, and uses what they see to shape sessions 3 to 5.
Is this therapy or a clinical service?
No. This is specialist guidance for parents, not diagnosis or treatment. Session 1 includes a safety screen, so anything needing the GP, NHS or CAMHS is identified and routed to the right service.
Does my child need a diagnosis?
No. You can join while your child is awaiting a diagnosis, or without pursuing one. The work starts with the meltdowns your family is dealing with now.
Why are there 8 weeks but only 6 sessions?
Weeks 5 and 7 are deliberate practice weeks, not gaps. You run the plan in real life, keep the short meltdown log going and have a message check-in with your specialist before the next session.
