The research behind it
Speech and Language Development is informed by the research behind parent-implemented language intervention, including the Roberts and Kaiser meta-analysis, which found language gains when parents were coached to change how they talked with their child. It is guidance for parents coached by a speech and language therapist, not diagnosis or treatment, and sits alongside NHS speech and language therapy rather than replacing it.
How we'll know it worked
You see your child's baseline language sample from session 1 beside a new sample from the final session, with a written summary to keep. Success looks like target words and sentence structures appearing in daily life, with school noticing the difference too.
- Two or three goals in your own words, scored from 0 to 10 in session 1 and again at the midpoint and end. A move of 3 or more points is the standard CAMHS benchmark for meaningful change.
- A weekly checklist of the target words and sentence structures your child used.
- A language sample taken before and after, compared side by side.
- A note from the school SENCO on whether school notices a difference.
Is this for me?
Your child uses fewer words than their peers, their sentences are hard to follow, or instructions do not seem to land.
You want to start helping now, with online parent coaching and any agreed direct child therapy in person at home.
Nursery, school or an NHS assessment has identified language delay or DLD, but you are unsure what to do at home.
You need support for a language delay or DLD profile, rather than autism-specific early communication.
You are waiting for NHS speech and language therapy, or appointments are too far apart to build momentum.
You want structured help alongside NHS support, with your referral checked in session 1 and made if it is missing.

Common questions
Who comes to the sessions, and are they online?
The coaching sessions are online and just for you, although partners and other carers are welcome. If the plan agreed in session 1 includes direct therapy with your child, those sessions happen in person at your home while your parent sessions stay online.
What if it does not work?
No outcome is guaranteed, and the final session says plainly if the goals have not been met. Your therapist will route you to a different programme or specialist if the original plan was not the right fit, offer a discounted top-up block if more time is needed, or give you a written referral summary for the GP or NHS if the need is clinical.
Does this replace NHS speech and language therapy?
No, it sits alongside NHS speech and language therapy, not instead of it. Session 1 checks your referral status, makes a referral if one is missing, and routes any red flags to the GP or NHS.
Is this suitable for older children?
Yes. The therapist matches the work to your child's age, with storytelling, retelling and sequencing for older children, or target language through play and shared books for younger children.
How is this different from Early Communication Coaching?
Speech and Language Development is for language delay and DLD profiles. Early Communication Coaching is the early communication programme for autistic and late-talking children. Both provide specialist guidance for parents, not diagnosis or treatment.
