Clear, kind and jargon-free. I finally understand the difference between a gap and a barrier. One session was enough to get us moving, though we'll book another before his annual review.

Good honest advice, including telling us a tutor probably WOULD help in our case, and what to look for so we didn't waste money. Respect for not pretending otherwise.

My daughter's PDA means anything that looks like a lesson is a no. The specialist completely got it and gave us interest-led ways to keep her learning without demands. She's been making a Minecraft 'newspaper' all week. That's writing. I could cry.

Booked because maths homework ended in tears every single time. The teacher spotted signs of dyscalculia within twenty minutes and told us how to ask school for an assessment. Wish I'd known any of this a year ago.

The bit that got me was 'he spends 30 hours a week in a classroom, let's make those hours work'. No one had ever put it like that. The plan we took to school changed his timetable within a fortnight.

School kept saying she was 'coping'. The SENCo we spoke to helped me see the gap between coping and actually learning, and gave me the exact wording to request support. Two weeks later she's on the SEN register and has small-group phonics.

Common questions

Is this tutoring? Will you teach my child maths and English?

Not in the weekly-tuition sense, and we're upfront about that. Sessions are with a qualified SEND teacher who works out why learning is stuck and builds a plan for home and school. Many families find that's what they actually needed; if ongoing subject tuition genuinely is the answer, you'll leave knowing exactly what to look for in a tutor.

How is this different from hiring a SEND tutor?

Specialist SEND tutoring agencies typically charge £90 to £120 an hour, week after week. A session here is £80, one-off, and aims at the cause rather than adding another teaching hour: your child spends around 30 hours a week in a classroom, so getting school's support right usually moves more than one extra hour ever could.

Is my child on the call?

Sessions are for you. You're the one dealing with homework, school and the day-to-day, and you know your child best. The specialist helps you understand what's going on and gives you strategies that work, without introducing a stranger into your child's week.

My child is out of school at the moment. Can you still help?

Yes. Whether it's school avoidance, a managed move or waiting for a placement, the specialist can help you keep learning ticking over gently at home without pressure, and talk through your options with school or the local authority.

We already have a tutor. Is there any point?

Often, yes. A good session gives your tutor a clear picture of the barrier and the strategies that fit, so the hours you're already paying for work harder. The written plan is yours to share.
